Windows 7 Upgrade–will Files Still Be There?

I was wondering if I upgrade from Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium then will everything still remain on my hard drive, or will I lose everything I have? Will all my files and data still be there but just on a better operating system or will everything be gone when I upgrade?

Whether you are upgrading your OS or installing new OS,it is always good to back up your data or files that you need. This is to be safe,in cause anything go wrong during the upgrading. Just back it up to an external hard drive, flash drive,cd/dvd,etc.
But normally, for upgrading of OS. Your data or files will be still there.

The file structure should stay the same as it was before. Anything in the ‘windows’ folder will be moved to a ‘windows. old’ folder. Definitely back up anything important anyway though, just in case.

Providing you just do an upgrade and not a complete install with a format then yes it should still be there.
That being said, I highly recommend backing up all your personal data and files ahead of time just in case something goes wrong. This is a good practice anytime you do a major upgrade like this.
I also suggest before you do the upgrade that you download the Windows 7 Upgrade Adviser tool free from Microsoft and run it. This will tell you if there are any application incompatibilities, and what you can expect from the user experience based on hardware performance.

if you do an upgrade, not a fresh install of windows, all your files should remain untouched. However if you can, back up anything important because you just never know with Microsoft!
