Windows 7 Upgrade From Xp (and Vista)?

What will be needed to upgrade from XP to windows 7 (or even Vista)? Will I need the disk, the serial key or nothing at all? I am not 100% sure I will be able to locate my disk from my laptop for XP but the serial is attached to the bottom of the unit.
I was able to find the answer, though I may have missed it, here:

    You probably need the serial number and that’s that

    Ryan,
    You WILL need the cd to insert during the upgrade setup. You should be able to order a copy of Windows XP or Vista (whichever came with your machine) re-installation media from your laptop manufacture.
