hi tasleem, to upgrade you have to know how to replace the driver and this could be a problem so do yourself a favoo and let a computer repairman do it for you. sorry i cannot give more information than that but it takes hours of reading to do a format but i can tell you that you need two things that will make a computer run correctly a good database and a good knowledge base so by all see a repairman good. good luck hope i was helpfulto you

You can upgrade from XP to Vista. You can not from XP to Win7 without formatting - too many differences between the programs.
You will need to purchase a copy of Vista. They sell both a full version and a cheaper upgrade version. Check the box, it will tell you if it is an upgrade only version.
When you run the upgrade, it will replace the XP files with Vista files but nor alter any of your data or other programs. You may still need to locate drivers for the hardware in your computer if the drivers are not on the Vista install disk (50/50). Check the web site of your PC’s manufacturer for the drivers before you begin the upgrade.
Realize that if you do an upgrade, you will bring over all the errors, orphans, XP drivers, and other baggage from XP into Vista. The results is usually a PC that runs much slower than if you do a clean install. So while it is possible to upgrade without formatting, most IT pros (like myself) do not recommend it.
If you want to go to Win7 without formatting, you would have to upgrade to Vista and then buy the upgrade from Vista to Win7.
If you decide to format instead, then go all the way to Win7 instead of Vista. Vista is already 3 years old, and Microsoft has only promised to support it for another year or two. While it will continue to support Win7 for the next 5-7 years (based on their track record with earlier versions of Windows). So within a couple years you would have to upgrade your Vista. If you are going to format, skip Vista (and a second format a few months from now) and go to win7
